Rogue Legacy was one of the best indie games of 2013 and it remains one of the best for this year too. You can use a single cross-format save for each, and yet version has its own optional format-specific controls, such as using the DualShock 4 touchpad.Īlso included is all the extra content that’s been released in the last yeas (including extra rooms, bosses, and a new class), which makes for an extremely generous package given the price.

This is a Cross-Play game so although it’s almost identical to the original PC release you get the PlayStation 3, 4, and Vita versions all as part of the same purchase. To be honest the bad guys are probably the weakest element of the whole game, with not nearly enough variety amongst them, but it’s a small criticism for a game that is not only hugely imaginative but expertly balanced and impressively refined. Although in typical Western fashion they’re not very good bosses and only notable because of their size and how much you’ll swear when you die just before beating one. It also helps that the game is more finite than most of its peers, with four clearly delineated areas – each with a boss at the end of it. One all the more impressive because the 2D platforming is enjoyable purely on its own merits – the controls are precise and responsive and you rarely end up blaming anyone but yourself for an unexpected death. Others meanwhile, like irritable bowel syndrome, have no effect on the gameplay at all (even if the fart clouds that result look like they should be able to clear out the room in an instant).Īs you might gather Rogue Legacy is not a game that takes itself very seriously, but the randomisation of the traits does wonders for the variety – as you sit waiting to find out what bizarre condition you’ll be diagnosed with next.Ĭombined with the more direct action it’s the perfect introduction to roguelikes and an inspired mix of genres.
These are generally useful, while others like vertigo (play the whole game upside down) and dementia (phantom enemies appear everywhere) are anything but. Rogue Legacy (PS4) – a loveable roguelikeīut you also end up with less predictable traits, such as dwarfism (very useful for accessing secret areas) and OCD (gain magic points for breaking all the objects in a room). The downside is that they can’t keep any unspent gold, so you can’t just save up between goes and you have to spend everything at once.
#Rogue legacy ps4 upgrade
They inherit all your worldly possessions and are able to upgrade and customise themselves before they too enter the castle. When you die, and the game’s difficulty is enough that this is a swift inevitability, you switch to playing as your heir. The catch is that these upgrades aren’t for the character you’re playing as, but their offspring. You can use these funds to upgrade your skills, as well as finding blueprints to unlock new weapons and equipment, and runes that enable new magic abilities. That’s a tricky thing to do given how difficult 2D platformers are to design but generally everything works very well, although occasionally the different rooms (which aren’t random and do repeat) don’t always connect together quite right.Īs you earn cash for smiting your way through the ranks of evil the game’s role-playing roots begin to show through. However, the maps you battle through are, like any good roguelike, randomly generated. It does not store any personal data.First impressions suggest it’s actually a straight action game, something like a cross between old school Castlevania and Ghost ‘N Goblins.
